ok call me stupid but i fenced in 500 acres with pipe and cable fencing you dont even want to know what it cost but it has 3 inch top pipe and 3 strands of 3/8 cable

my question is did i go overboard or could i have used something just as safe but cheaper?

this is where i keep my 7 horses and a mule and grow and bale hay

Well I bet no one will be taking down the fence to ride on your property or to take your horses.

and as a little extra it take 120 gallons of paint to cover all the top rail and cable i believe the guy said it was 145 linear miles of rail and 3x that in cable

Sounds like its a done deal, why worry about what you could have used now?
I bet its a beautiful, nice, sturdy fence! Good for you!

Dont Know how much it cost, but at least it is done, and done right, and wont have to be fixed every year.

I am jealous too, I struggled to afford putting up fencing around 3 acreas to make myself 2 pastures, and I used the electric 2 inch tape.

Junk, if you ask me, the tape shreads with the wind, and then the electric stops working, and you have horses escaping, Now after only 2 years We are having to sink a couple thousand dollars more into it to fix it.

You did good.

well reason im askin is i have a additional 120 acres to fence in for horses and cattle
this land will be holding horses from a horse rescue im donating grazing rights to but the cows will be mine ive never raised cows before but i know barb wire is fine for them but ill never use it around any horse and im looking for something that will work to hold in both that wont cost a small fortune like the other did

i used what i did this time because it is the land i live on and keep my own horses and mule there the other land is where ill keep cows dont know how many yet and not sure of rescue horses since they have only put 5 on there in the last year that i gave them access to it

I don't know your pricing over there but here the cheapest and best way for us to fence was electric.

The fencing is 3 strands, top and bottom live, middle earth. In 14 years we have done very little to it apart from brushcutting the grass under it.

Have lost only 2 horse through it.

1 silly shetty who was playing rearing games on the boundary line and came down on top of it and chose to go forward. From then on he gave it a wide berth.

One silly fruitcake of a tb from a stable that firstly took off over the interior fencing, then through/over the boundary fence and kept going for a good 5 miles. He never went near it again either.

Never lost one cow through it though.

Cattle can be much harder on fences than horses - but then cows are much more durable when it comes to rubbing up against things like barbed wire (and they know it)

How about something like the high-tensile Centaur fencing for a top rail, with several strands of coated wire under it? If you use the kind that has a hot wire built into it, you can space the posts out to like 16' apart. It's strong enough to contain cows, but unlike barbed wire, won't cut a horse (in fact, they kinda bounce off it)

Here's the Caddillac of the type, Centaur (of course, they're the priciest, too):

http://www.centaurhtp.com/

A couple of their biggest competitors:

http://www.rammfence.com/fence/flex-fence-41.htm

http://www.kencove.com/fence/Horse+Fence_products.php

I know of several farms in my area that have used these are similar products and they look great, and I haven't heard any bad words about thier performance, either.

Don't know about your area - how fast does the forage grow there?

Around here you could easily keep 30 or so horses rotating with 10 cattle on 100 acres of pasture, except for the driest of years...so maybe 20 horses and 10 cows for some margin of safety.

mike looked at me like i was kinda stupid but his words were hey ur paying ill spread whatever ya want ????

did i put a bad mix down?? its all the grass i hear horses like and winter wheat grows for the winter right? so they should have year round forage or did i screw up again like my wife thinks?

Softrider, the wider tape is quite wind resistant. I've had good luck with 1/2" wide tape but wire is better yet.

Fencing

All I can say is electrobraid fencing. We have used it in numerous pastures. Safe fencing and we wouldnt use anything else. East to put up and great looking with the white posts that go with it.
