Electric Fence Question

I was wondering if any of you use this as your permanent fencing??? It says great for temporary or portable fencing but would it work for permanent fencing???

Would also love to see pictures of any that are using it just to give me an idea of what it looks like and the post... Thanks

I have seen this used as permanant fencing for cows and donkeys in our area. To my knowledge it has worked fine, but as it is not my fence or anyone I know, I couldn't really say for sure. The one I've seen was 3 strands.

My concern is that everyone tells me horror stories of using the high tensil wire. Horses getting caught up in it and hurting themself. But the tape is not an option because I've seen how much trouble it can be and become. An instructor at a boarding stable uses this and she says she loves it because the horses won't get hurt by it sense its so thick and sturdy. ???? Opinions???

I have used it and didn't like it.. it wears out too quickly in the sun here and any bigger weeds ( we have a lot of pasture ) seem to short it out....

Before we put up the new small squares horse fencing, we did use the high tensilewire on the top and bottom and put this un electrified in the middle- that seemed to work very well..

I used it and hated it. I do use Electro-braid as permanent fence though and really like it. That stuff seemed to come apart to easy. I was continuously splicing it together.

That's the same electric I use & I do use it as a permanet fence. The only fault I find with it is it's poor visability. I've never had a horse...or cow...get out of it & after just one zap, they'll never touch it again. I've even thrown them in the electric field without turning it on (only when I'm home to check on them every once in a while) with no escapes. Like I said though, the visability is an issue but I do free run them at all gaits in there & they've always seen it in time so I guess the visability can't be all that bad. I was thinking about the tape instead but it's too windy here for that.

i use high tensil fencing and if you put up more strands (i use six) your horses will be less likely to get hurt in it.

I've always had electric fencing and have tried just about everything other than the tape. I've used this fencing only to find the visibility was awful. I couldn't see it, the horses couldn't see it and the deer couldn't see it. I still have some left over and I use it for tying insulators or or other fencing things just not as the "fence".

If you're looking for a good electric fence I would go for the electrip rope/braid or the tape. I love the rope fence. It's highly visible and strong. My horses respect it a lot. I have an accident here and there but I've never had a horse get hurt and the insulators usually give and it's and easy fix.

No, that stuff is a bit thinner and more of a twine. I got mine through Ramm Fence. It's a little more pricey but it is really good stuff. Some of the cheaper ropes don't hold up as well. TSC sometimes has it and you can also get it through Jeffer's.

Do a search for Electo-braid. It is about a 1/4 inch braid, not with the twist like regular rope.

I'm concerned I won't be able to get anything i have to order in time. We're putting up the fence this weekend if the rain holds. TSC only advertises the rope.... I don't know what to do.............

How many strands do you use? I was thinking two??? One in the middle and one toward the top???

Fencing

We have used Electro braid and absolutely love it. Our colt was frisky and ran right into and it has give to it so he ended up with out a mark on him. We wouldnt go with any other fencing. Totally safe for your horse, it is also white so highly visible.

Hope this helps MN Gal

We use it permanantly in addition to our wooden fencing, but do have some paddocks we havent fenced off yet and have just two strands up.

For visibility we tie flags on it, they have the pink and orange marking tape stuff at home depot (not sure what its REALLY called). They usually use it to mark trees or property lines that sort of thing...

We have never had a problem with it. I think if your horses respect electric you shouldnt have a problem either.

I've used all three. The shorting out issue GBar mentioned is why I'm back to two strands of high tensile. I use bright red plastic taping tied every six to 12 feet for visibility. It looks like I'm constantly under construction, but everyone has no problem seeing it - including visitors.

So the rope tends to shorten out easier then the high tensil? I had all intentions of doing the flagging thru out so visibility is something I'm not to concerned about.

So far so good on the electric respect thing. My mare is use to it and just stays away. Our filly put her nose to it once in our current pasture which just has the top done with the square horse fencing below it and she hasn't bothered it sense.
