Question low impendence electric fence chargers

Hi all, I've got a fencing delemma I would like some advice on. I just strung up one line of electric fencing in a very brushy area & was wondering what type of charger to use. I've heard of people using low impendence (i think) chargers for areas that have a lot of brush. Do they really work? I will be trimming some of the brush down but I won't be able to get it all. Electric is all I can afford right now so I would like to find a way to make it work. I've had a dead wire up for a couple of years now & they've never gone anywhere near it so it doesn't have to be perfect as I'm quite sure the mere site of it will deter them.

Also, for future reference, what do you do in the way of posts in swampy areas? I don't mean for the electric fence but say for... a rail fence or field fence? I hope in the future to be able to put up a good rail fence or feild fence but as about 1/4 of the one fenceline is swampy I wouldn't know what to use for posts.

Thanks a bunch!

I have electric up and I make sure it packs a punch. I do need to go around and trim away any real heavy brush about 2X a year. I'm not sure what you can do about swampy areas except to get long enough posts to hit solid ground.

Trim as much as you can and make sure your fencer is wel grounded. Most of the good ones have a meter on the front that shows you how well it's working. For posts see if you can get old telephone poles. They are usually free if they're being replaced. They are soaked in creosote so they last forever.

I run a fairly low impedence fence charger, .5 joules. I can tell you that the biggest things is having good ground. We put down 3 8ft. ground rods but I am also running 3 hot lines and one ground. I would recommend atleast 1 or 2 well placed ground rods. We put our at the beginning of the electric and have had absolutely no problems with loosing charge or not enough charge. Also, I would suggest in you marshy kind of area, that perhaps a load or two of dirt, and when you place those poles in particular to concrete them on. As suggested telephone poles, or if you can get some old railroad ties they even work better. They will not rot, are heavy and if concreted in won't go anywhere.

With a good charger your posts need be only 50-100' apart on a straight run. I have good corner bracing and the remaining posts are about 30' apart. Because barbed wire is heavy and 3 strands are often used, posts need to be much closer. Because the occasional moose goes thro my electric I have joins in it that will give with that kind of strain.
