Woes!!!!!!

I board at a very small barn. It's just my 2 horses and another couple's 3 horses. The couple doesn't own the barn but they do run it and do a wonderful job of it. The pastures are drug, and mowed. Stalls are clean and they do all of the feed except when I'm there I'll do it for them. Now don't get me wrong I love this place and the couple but there is more than meets the eye. My 2 horses are the highest in the pecking order. BlackJack does tend to pick on the other horses and there are constantly bites on everyone. I don't know what to do about it except to seperate him. That's fine by me but the couple never does. Nobody even knows if it's him, but the couple is blaming him for everything!!!!! When I took him away to another trainers barn for a couple of days for some intense training they were all snoody and saying that nobody missed him and there were no bites and it's too bad he wasn't gone for longer!!!! I am just so ticked because they have something against him. His hay net is always empty and his water bucket is empty. When the man is filling the hay nets he leaves BlackJack's in his stall. (When it's empty I might add) When I ask the man he replies that BlackJack is too fat and doesn't need any hay. He may very well be fat but he needs the hay to keep him busy or he'll crib and pace and weave. I just don't know what to do!!!!! I love the place but.......... They might be mad because BlackJack is pretty new and they didn't help me find him......the horse they found for me threw me into the fence!!!!!

HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If your horse is not being cared for appropriately, it is your responsibility to move him somewhere else, or take over his care. He can't speak up for himself, he needs you to do it for him. I assume you are paying for full board, if that is the case, whether they "like" the horse is immaterial, they are being paid to care for him.

Apparently not, if your boy isn't getting fed according to the contract. You are his mouth. You need to stand up and get him the treatment he deserves. YOU need to do this, and not hope that others will do it for you.

He is depending upon YOU, and you need to either get the problem fixed, or move him and the other one on to greener pastures...

Whatever you do, remember that YOU are who can speak for him. If not you, who will?

Best-
Noni

Talk to them again, and bring a copy of the contract, the part where it says "managers will feed x-times per day"...no contract? Then GET OUT!

That's AWFUL.

I totally agree with everyone else! Horses have a pecking order and there is almost always going to be a biter and a bitee. They should know and be used to that! Nothing justifies their lack of care!

Yep, try to talk to them, and explain your concerns, even about speaking negatively about Blackjack. I might even say something to the effect of, if Blackjack is not wanted or welcome here, we can move!

Yes, I agree. If you are paying for your board and it includes feed and feedings, you need to say something. Talk with whom ever is in charge, relay your concerns. If they cannot understand you or your concerns then possible it might be time to find a new housing arrangement. You have to speak for your horses, they cannot speak for them selves. Good Luck, I hope it all works out for you!
