How to build my own feeder?

Hi, I was wondering if any of you guys made their own hay feeder. My husband wants to build one to put outside but he doesn't really know how... He told me to find a plan or a picture but I can't find any! I don't want to buy the steel ones for round bales, I find them too big, we feed the small square bales and we only have 2 horses...

Thanks!!!

Great big ol tractor tire. Keeps the hay contained and nothing for them to cut or injure themselves on.

Check out some of these plans from NDSU extension service...

http://www.ag.ndsu.nodak.edu/abeng/plans/index.htm

I'd look in Horse, Misc, and Cattle first. The plans are free to download as PDF documents, or you can order them already printed for cheap.

You need to get Adobe Acrobat Reader...its available for free, though I don't know the site to get it from, but Adobe's site would be good place to start. You should be able to find it by googleing "Adobe Acrobat Reader".

Ok, hubby decided to go with a tire... much easier to build! Do I need to cut the bottom so the water doesn't stay in???

We never did. We just always moved the tires around or if we didn't the horses would when they wanted food. If we saw water in them we would lift the tires to empty it then we were done again.

We plunked a piece of plywood in the bottm of tires when I was a kid. They drilled some holes in the bottom to let them drain in the rain.
