To boot, or not to boot...kinda long - UPDATE!

So I have this boarder in my barn who is driving me absolutely batty. We will call him "Jim", and call the horse "Mo".
Mo is a very young colt. Jim is a first-time horse owner and is on the road alot, so he is very rarely at the barn. And unfortunately, Jim knows NOTHING about horses. Jim and his friend "Becky" who boarded at the same barn before they came to board with me, had this agreement. Since Jim knows nothing about horses. he gave half interest of Mo to Becky, in exchange for Becky taking care of the horse, training etc. Becky boards her horse with me as well. (Yes, I know, confusing, but keep reading).
Long story short, Mo was turned out last weekend and ran into a fence post, needed stitches. I contacted Jim who couldn't be reached. So I called the vet, who came out and took care of Mo. Jim didn't come out until about 4 hours later, after the vet and everybody had left. He talked to another boarder (who wasn't there to witness the incident) and got a totally bogus account of what happened. He has NEVER called me to find out what happened, even though I have left numerous messages.
So Jim gets the vet bill. Now he's furious, telling everybody in my barn that I am responsible. (UH, no, read your contract). He's in MY barn bad mouthing me to everyone when I'm not here.
A week later he decides to sell Mo to Becky, vet bill and all. THEN two days later he backs out of the sale. He comes back to my barn, corners one of my instructors and starts badmouthing me, telling her that I am a liar, etc. Asking all kinds of questions, etc. He has now approached at least 4 of my boarders.
I don't want to make a scene, but I do not want drama in my barn. That is not the kind of facility we operate here. I don't want Becky to take her horse and go, but I do not want Jim here anymore. Not only is he a pain, but I don't have patience for someone who asks me for horse advice and then goes to 5 other people bc he thinks I'm wrong. Plus, I feel that he is a liability.
What do ya'll think?
Thanks in advance!

"Jim" seems like a very un-reasonable person. I would get rid of him, especially since he is so disrespectful to you in YOUR barn

You shouldnt have to deal with that at all, especially from a guy who seems to know nothing...

I tell him very nicely that things are just not working out and it would be best if he left. He is already bad mouthing you. Why should you have to put up with anymore? Give him the 30 day notice and just let him leave.

In the light of the harvest moon, with the crisp autumn air fresh in our faces, we stood quietly on the veranda, following the disgruntled silhouette of Jim as he passed slowly over the horizon...

Yeah, you definetly need to get rid of him. He's stirring up unrest right now, and keeping him around will bite you in the butt later on. Trust me, I've had my fair share of difficult boarders. Haha, luckily we told them to as Lopin said "Hit the road..."

I had a similar situation at the barn I board at. Someone was accusing the manager of not feeding the man's horses, which even I took as an insult b/c even this man knows that I feed alot of times at night. The owner calmly told him he had three weeks to find new homes for his horses and to not come back. That was the end of him.

I would get the loot and give him the boot! Pronto!

Coming from a boaring prospective I can't belive that the boarder stood there and took that kinda bulls**t from him!!!
I know I have been with "my" (hahaha I wish) farm for the last 3ish odd years now and I have seen boarders come and go and they have tried to bad mouth my barn manager, which I don't take to kindly to. This is not only my horses home but mine too, as I'm there just as much! I agree with the rest of the posters and give him his notice and ask him to leave, as he will continue to ruffle as many feathers as he possibly can. Once they have a bee in there bonnett man oh man the rumors start to fly and it can really get ugly!

Good luck!!

Been there and don't want to see it again...

Hey there Harvest, who am I to talk with my own issues . If I found out someone was bad mouthing me in my own facility.......I wouldn't be so polite. As us frenchmen put it, "Ah bbuhbyela". Hats off to ya for not wanting to cause a scene but I would confront him when the others are around and ask "what's the problem?" and "if ya got something to say here I am so say it" and if he fumbles with his words and acts like he's done nothing wrong, kindly call him a coward and ask him to leave the premiss and to never return.

I would not only kiss Jim goodbye, but possibly the other boarder who gave the bogus account to Jim in the first place. Why would someone do that?Sounds like a pot stirrer to me. In Jim's defense (NOT that he deserves defending really) if someone told me a bogus account of how my horse was hurt-I would not think they'd have reason to lie and might believe them too?? That is NOT to say I agree with or condone how Jim is handling himself. But if the pot stirrer stays, history is very likely to repeat itself-with or without Jim.

As much as I agree with every one and as I said above, it is BS, I personally would not stoop to his level and belittle him in front of the other boarders. I would definitely call him on it in front of some of them that he said things too, therefore making it impossible for him to lie and say he did nothing! And then still boot him out! I really believe that handling things in a civil and respectful manner (even though he did not act that way), it shows you are the bigger person and as the barn owner, that will reflect better on you. And as I said before though, still get rid of him because as jadesmygirl said, with the same s**t disturber there, history will repeat itslf! Good luck!

Hmmmm, something happens to my horse at the barn that requires a vet visit, who should I ask to find out what happened???

Oh yeah the logical answer would definately be another boarder that wasn't there at the time. HUH??

Geee my first reaction would be to ask the barn manager (go figure) and thank her for taking care of my horse.

Some people just lack that common sense. Hopefully he has enough to find his way out of the driveway when you kick him to the curb.

I'm laying in wait for him lol....he should be out this weekend. But maybe not. I think he knows what's coming.
Everybody who knows me knows that I have a big mouth lol and I don't take kindly to people messing with me or my livelihood. The more I think about what he has said about me and my facility, the angrier I get. I am afraid that I'll call him out in front of everybody and I will be less than a lady I would definitely take GREAT satisfaction in doing so. But I don't want to look unprofessional, either. (sigh) and the sad thing is, I REALLY love his horse.....such a cute little guy. It's not his fault his owner is such an
And the other boarder who ran his mouth? He's on his way out too. He is another wannabe, who is mouthy and thinks he knows everything. I had to tell him off a few weeks ago when he got nasty with my 9 yo daughter. His walking papers are out there waiting for him....
Alas, the trouble makers must go. I will definitely keep ya'll posted!
Anyone need a few stalls in Ohio?? lol

This man would be removing my foot from his butt if he got in my childs face. You are much more restrained that I would be about this whole situation. I agree with the others, boot 'em both to the curb!

Not only boot him, tell him if he steps foot on the property again you'll have him arrested for trespassing, sue him for the vet bill and get him for defaming your character.

That guy crossed the lines.

Keep us posted.
