Boarding in/ near New York??? (or CT or NJ)

I am about to be transferred to NYC for work, and desperately need to find a place to board my girl nearby...at least sort of... would love to find a place with paddocks/pasture (I know this means CT or NJ), arena and possibly some sort of trail access nearby... or at least a reasonsble place to keep her safe, sound and plump!

Please tell me what you are paying near NYC, how far it is, and if YOU have place available for a great boarder and horse, please PM me!

Thanks for all your advise!

Im not sure if you got my PM before, but if not, here it is again.

I dont live in NYC anymore, I now live upstate. I dont know of any boarding facilities right in the city, which means you will have to go to Jersey or Long Island. (Both are probably going to be closer than CT) Full board in both of these areas is going to run you roughly $1200-$1500/month, or higher.

You can check out boarding facilities through an internet search and maybe make some phone calls as well.

When do you plan on moving? Have you found a place yet?

I can ask some friends in Long Island where they board and let you know.

Let me take a wild guess - not too many people in New York City have horses, right?

I do not personaly board here, but I do take lessons. It is very nice, the horses get great care. I'll post the link. I beleive they can take about 5 more horses. I do have to say though, that the trails are a bit adventurous, you have to walk (leading your horse) about half way up.

From NYC It about an hour (about 50 miles). I don't know if you want to drive that far...

On the contrary Face. Long Island is full of horses...mostly hunter/jumper barns (I also know of a few Polo clubs out there). Alot of the owners live in Manhatten. Equestrian sports are acually very popular around the area.

The Hampton Classic is one of the biggest events of the summer.

They must not be making Arkansas salaries...

Let's see - 2 horses at $1,500 each, that's $36,000/year for full board. At 65% take-home, you would have to gross $55,000 just to board the 2 horses!

Sorry, but that's sort of sticker shock to us Arkies...

I have heard about some of the barns out there are 3-4 stories high! With multi-level stalls where horses are kept on the 2nd and 3rd floors! If you see one out there, please send pictures. I wanna see this!!! I was told by a friend of mine that lived in New York that she went to a barn like this and they had ramps to lead the horses to the second floor. I was wondering how they get them out in case of a fire.

I have a friend who has a barn and lives on Long Island, I will get her info to you. I also know someone else who is in NY and will send her info to you as well.

I've never seen a mulit-story barn (boarding/training, etc) but around here, we have a 2 story barn that one of the fairgrounds has and let me tell you, it sucks!

Off topic, I know...but I can't believe those prices! Astronomical! Just one more reason I'll stick to the south!

I used to live in New York, Staten Island actually. And you would be surprised at the number of stables there. My two horses were boarded at a place that is now no longer a stable, and yes there are multi level barns and even horse stalls made out of storage containers.

I have since moved to New Jersey, Mommouth County, it is a little over an hour from the city. There are tons of boarding facilities around here, but I will tell you now they are definatly not cheap! We were paying $250 for rough board, but the place was an amazing old estate with 500 acers of trails, which is alot for the area. Then there are also additioanl trails thet belong to the state. If you want your horse turned out everyone day 8-5 the place, there is a woman who does full board there. Last I heard her prices were $600, and had gone up. In my area this is by the cheapest that you will find full board for and it is probably the only real farm that isn't a hunter/jumper/dressage barn.

If you want turnout and you want trails this is the place to be, there is also an arena. Around me this is the cheapest place. If you are interested I can email you some pictures of the place, or I can post them later on, and of course give you the number.

"I hear the south calling me"......oh wait! I am in the south!

I guess I've stayed here for a reason....no wonder a decent horse costs so much up there.......a $25,000 horse doesn't look so bad when it costs $1000 to $1500 a month to board one!

Yup prices are CRAZY!! It is very rare that I see a horse in this area priced for antyhing less than $5000, and that would be low! If I told you guys how much real estate taxes were you would literally have a horse.

Anyways here are some pictures of the place that I was talking about. I don't have the number on me right now, but I will be able to get it tomorrow if you do want it.

This is a picture looking up at the barn from one of the fields.

This is a picture of one of my horses running down his field. I would say it's about a 5 acre field.

I know, it's crazy. Tack that on to a $3000/month rent payment for a itsy bitsy, teeny weeny one bedroom apartment in Manhatten, and thats a small fortune over the course of a few years.

Oh yeah, and they wont even rent to you unless you make a minimum of 50x your monthly rent (so if your rent is $1000/month, you would be required to make $50k/year, and so on) and let me tell you, there are no apartments in Manhatten for as "little" as $1000. (unless you want to go to Harlem, and even then, your pushin it )

And like Babycakes said, there are hardly any decent horses around for less than $5000. Even now that I live up-state, that is still the minimum one can expect to pay.

I would never leave though

Northern Virginia isn't much better when it comes to horses. Board around here is about $600 a month. My daughter is talking about not coming home for the summer because she can't afford to board her horse here.

I live in Northern NJ, and there are an abundant number of boarding facilities. Depending on what you have to have, you will pay anywhere between $275.00--$400.00 for rough/full board. If you want an indoor arena, you will absolutely pay up near $800++. Where I live, many people own their own farms and do backyard boarding, and some do it as a business. You can find plenty around here for about $300-350 a month. This will usually include stall, turnout, outdoor arena, trails, and they will ususally charge extra if you want your winter blanket taken on and off. Friends of mine live in Newton, NJ. Newton is probably about an hour out of the city. They have about 12 or 14 acres and do boarding. I will PM you with the info, and you can contact them about boarding. I would take you myself, but I won't have room here until the spring. If any of you ever want to take a trip up here, we will board your horses overnight, I'm not too sure of any others that do that around here. We went to North Carolina with our two horses and we boarded at a farm for about a week and it was wonderful.. It only ran us about $10.00 per night, per horse.

I saw something like that too on animal planet, probably the same one......what a hole!! Poor things.

The stables on Long Island though, are nicer (alot nicer) than many peoples homes I know. (Very lucky horses )

Oohhh... I am still having sticker shock from just the apartments... now the little gal is going to eat up more than what I pay for my 4000 sqf housea month in NOLA...
Thank you all for your great links and suggestions, please keep them coming, ALL help is appreciated and needed

So, no double-decker condo's for Ms Twiggs, no city life for $1500, hope still springs eternal and I know I'll be able to find not only a place but some friends thanks to Y'ALL

I am thinking eventually I might want to buy a little farm up there, but for now, a lovely space to rest her head and some room to run!

Snow-white,

Did you find a place yet? This may be too late, but I was considering a move myself about a year ago, and found a nice place in Staten Island. 400.00/month. I can't remember the name, and can't seem to find it in google either.

My sister is in Brooklyn, so if you're still looking I can have her check it out. I'm sure she remembers where we were.

I used to live in New York (Brooklyn) for a short time.... there are some places to ride in the city.. even in Manhattan... we moved away for a few years and then contemplated moving down there again; except we ended up moving to ohio.. but in that time i did a lot of research on stables in NYC area...

also.. are you actually living in the city, or do you plan on commuting in.. you can consider areas north of the city as well.. they have the metro-north railroad... tarrytown is one area.. it's about a 40 minute train ride to grand central..less if it's express... you might be able to find more resonable stables north of the city rather than in NJ/ long island...

Jamaica Bay Riding Academy has boarding.. you can even ride along the beach...

http://www.horsebackride.com/jb/boarding.php (though it doesn't list the price... you would have to be able to drive there..)...

And I don't mean to hijack your thread but some information for those who might find horseback riding in NYC kinda interesting...

This is one of the neatest articles on "trail riding" in NYC...lol... Urban Cowboy... i read it about 5 years ago...

http://gorp.away.com/gorp/location/n...boro_horse.htm

And then this is

Claremont - you can actually "rent" a horse and ride it to central park.. this is one of the places with the multi-floor stalls..the horses go up to their stalls on their own when they are done..no leading... i've been by here myself.. you would never know if it wasn't for the sign...

Article with the history of claremont from the NYTIMES

This was a place in Brooklyn you used to be able to board at, apparently they lost one of their barns to development, so it's no longer available, but it was cool, their are bridle trails in and around prospect park...and their was a small arena to ride in and I've seen horses turned out there as well... they still offer trail rides there...

Also - some pictures of stables and former stables in NYC

It's funny.. I'm both a country girl and a city girl... i'm very comfortable and happy in both areas.... i think part of it is I seek out what I love most though.. my animals... no matter where I am...
