snake detterrent(spelling???)

hi all!! i have a snake question. we just recently bought an acerage, we actually took possession yesterday. it is a fixer upper 1910 farmhouse. we are actually gutting the whole first floor down to the studds. so it will have all new electric, plumbing, ductwork, dry-wall, etc etc etc. ANYWAY, we have spotted a corn snake curled up on the window sill(on the outside) and a garder snake while i was weedeating. and there is a bunch of snake skin in the crawl space. let me just give you a bit of history on my-self: I HATE SNAKES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! so anyway, my question is, besides chopping their heads off. (sorry if there are snake lovers out there). is there anything anyone does out there to deterr snakes from being on their acerage. we will not be living there for several months, obviously due to the renovation. so our dogs won't be there, but will the dogs deterr the snakes, or cats?????? thanks everyone!!! (i guess what i am looking for is something i can throw underneath the house that will make any snakes that think that they are going to continue to live there, scatter off of our property.) "bye bye snakes"

If I had a 1910 farmhouse, evidently post and beam construction, I can think of nothing better than a corn snake living in the crawlspace. They are worth their weight in gold as mousers.

But, if you really want to keep the pretty guy away, sprinkle a couple of boxes of mothballs under the house.

Find a horse or donkey that doesn't like snakes - pretty soon, all your snakes will be victims of the "snake dance", and will resemble dirty pancakes.

I tend to agree with Face, a nice cornsnake is a good mouse detterent. Garter snakes will account for many bugs and such too.

really??? so you guys think i should not try to get rid of them??? the house has not been lived in since december. (how someone lived in it, i do not know!!!!! i would call it "unliveable" the way it is.) but anyway, so without activity, i am sure the snakes moved right in. they are not IN the house, just around the outside. but it just freaks me out!!!!!!!

Hey, Luv2Game. Guess what lives out in nature??? Snakes!!!! Hee, hee. I guess you'd better get used to seeing some of them around. Hey, by the way, when you've got a job on that house that I can do, let me know and I'll be right out. Or I can watch kids if you an hubby need to work. Whatever you need to get in that place!

See you soon.

We have used Moth Balls, Sulfur to deter them away from fence line near the house and around the outside of the house. There is a product called "Snake Away" available at your local Home Depot. I have not tried this product.

We also set off several "Bug Bombs" and threw them up under the house. Dont really know if that helped the snakes........hopefully ran the one we saw make a run under the house far away from the house.

A good old shovel or hoe works wonderful also.

Hey, our farmhouse was built in 1910, too! I don't know anything about corn snakes, but those garter snake eat bugs and slugs. Might be good to try and like 'em. And if corn snake eat mice I'd keep those too.

Most snakes found inside and around old homes you definatly want to keep. If it really bothers you get some geese they eat snakes.

As long as they're not poisonous and keep out of my way (WAY far out of my way ) I don't mind snakes too bad. But if I catch a glimpse of one, I'm either sh**tin' and gittin' to the house, or that snake is vulture meat after I dice off that little head.

But in your case, I'd leave them there for a little while. At least while your rennovating. All that noise and commotion might make them scurry off on their own.

Keep the snakes!!! They won't hurt you, and are providing you a service that you would have to pay thousands of dollars for - extermination of rats, mice, voles, moles, groundhogs, cockroaches, termites, bugs, etc.

You may want to contact the nearest zoo, or reptile exhibit, Dept of Natural Resources, or Agricultural Extension service to get more information about reptiles in your area.

They give me the creeps too - but better a snake than rats!

Corn snakes eat mice - I'd be keeping them around (but out of the house) for sure!

Aw don't hate the snakes! They are great to have around and I let any snake that comes to wonder here stay. Although I don't kill the poisonous ones, I do get rid of them. Only because of family and my pets I have here. Can't have us getting bit by one of those! Heck anything to help with the rat population down at the barn is fine by me!

Don't try to catch the corn or garter snake unless you want to stink. They will musk on you. And its not a very nice smell either. Anyways, I doubt you'd try that but I wanted to mention it.

They will stay out of your way. They are more afraid of you than you are of them.

I love my snakes!

Brittany
