Has anyone built there own barns on here?

We are going to remodel the barn that came with this house. I want to put 5 stalls in it. I was wondering if anyone has built their own barns on here, or if you had pictures of your barns? To help me with ideas, on how to set our up inside. I would like to make the outside of the barn look better too.

I am building my barn, but its not yet done. It will be a two stall stable with hay storage and a tiny tack room.

Here is a link to a site with plans in Acrobat format, for free....lots of plans!

My husband built our barn. If I were more technologically literate, I would post a picture. One of these days I will get my children to teach me. We went to Barnes and Noble and purchased a book called "Building Small Barns, Sheds and Shelters" by Monte Burch. It was very helpful for us to get started. Our barn was originally for 3 horses and a tack room----before we even finished it, we had to add on another stall. LOL I told him to make it bigger, originally. LOL Our barn is 48' by 36' and it is awesome. I have waited my entire "horsey life" for it. Whatever you build.....make it larger than you think you need.

I will remember that.

Thanks for the pictures of the barn also, I got some ideas.

Lopin, I'll bet your barn cost a lot of money to build. I think If it were me I would have just added on a bedroom

Lopin -- I love your barn. Beautifully done.

do you need to get a building permit to build your own barn? (or to remodel one)
do those of you that build your own barn have electricity or water going to it?

I wanted an apartment above, but I didn't get one. We plan to add on in the future though and I hope to get a small apartment above that section of the barn then!!

Do you have a picture of what your barn looks like now? Is it an old dairy barn, pole barn or ?? How big is it? Pictures or a description would be helpful.

Bettymo: Yes, most people do run water and electric to their barns. As for a building permit, yes, you will need one.

Actually, you may or may not, depending on your local laws and zoning.

I didn't need a permit, in my county, all I needed was a zoning clearance, to make sure the setbacks and zoning were correct for the structure I wanted to build. building permits aren't needed for many agriculteral structures here.

for structures under 150 feet square, no permit or clearance is needed at all - a single stall 12 x 12 shed has 144 square feet.

If your place is zoned general agriculture you may not need a permit. Check with your local zoning agency and agriculture extension to find out what is needed.
