As a primary source of forage, the straight timothy or the timothy alfalfa would be best, or a timothy orchard grass mix.
Look on Craig's list, under the farm and garden listings for horse hay.
Also check the free horse mags you find at the feed store and tack shops, the ads in back often have hay suppliers.
When you go to look at it, the most important thing to watch out for is mold. If you see any mold in the hay, or if there is a lot of white dust in it, don't buy it. The hay should be sweet smelling and not have a lot of weeds/trash in it. Depending on the type, it should be green to golden in color. The more leafy the hay is, rather than stemmy, the better it usually is.
If you know somone with experience that you can get to come along the first time that would be the best.
