Oops, here I thought it would be a good idea to get it done in the fall to make sure there was nothing int there that could freeze up around the pump (as the first year we were out here, the guy who came out told me that there were lots of "ladies items" in there, that would've frozen up and caused problems - now THAT was an embarrassing conversation ). Maybe next time it gets done, I'll try to have it done a little earlier in the year, thanks horselessnomore

We've been in our place 5 yrs now, and had the septic tank pumped once 2 yrs ago. My hubby works for our local township and they come out with the pumper truck for about $150....Even though its just the two of us, we're careful...."yellow paper" goes in the waste basket, I buy liquid laundry soap with no phosphates, TRY to avoid the anti bacterial products (nearly imposseable these days) and we treat with some kind of spetic treatment once in a while....thanks for the reminder....

My hubby used to get o/t for going to people cabins to pump septic tanks for work.....he used to come home and say "their s**t was his bread and butter"......

Dishwashers and the highly alkaline soap are about the worst for a septic system. Also pans with cooking fats are wiped out with paper towelling and put in the garbage to keep as few fats as possible from going down the drain. Using vinegar instead of chemical cleaners is better. My tank was last pumped 15 years ago. One single lady had her tank pumped in the fall and there was not enough bacteria in the tank to keep it from freezing.
